It is awarded to every member of the US Armed Forces who have served during any one of four specified periods of armed conflict or national emergency from 1950 to the present. Combat or "in theater" service is not a requirement for the award. My father was a Colonel in the USAF and collected patches, Insignia and medals of all kinds from every Air Force, Army, Navy and Marine unit he visited all over the Country and World to give to me as souvenirs.
